Meet Chia Sisters

Drink Happy is an ongoing discovery of great beverage makers. Recently, the journey to find the most loved liquid health gems took us to the Nelson community in New Zealand, and boy did we strike gold with Chia Sisters! 

The awesome duo behind the Chia Sisters brand is Chloe and Florence. They craft their award winning health beverages in their hometown of Nelson, New Zealand. Surrounded by mountains, lakes, and at the edge of the pacific ocean; the outdoors is their playground. We sat down with the chia sisters to hear the story of their incredible journey. 

What is the meaning behind your business name?

We are called Chia Sisters because we are two sisters working together to make nutritious and sustainable drinks and foods from our solar powered juicery in Nelson. The Chia come from our hero drink range which is made from hydrated chia seeds in natural juices.

 

Why did you start your business?

Chia Sisters was founded 7 years ago. At that time there were no healthy drink options with a high level of nutrition. My sister was a triathlete and our dad was a world champion swimmer, so we were creating something to fuel them. We blended Nelson blackcurrants with hydrated chia seeds, shared them with our friends, then with Nelson, and then with New Zealand. Since then we have launched new ranges including local pressed juices, hemp smoothies, and sparkling coconut waters infused with roots and fruits.


 

What do you love about your industry?

 

I love how innovative the beverage scene is and how everyone collaborates. I think a lot of work needs to be done in the sustainability space so we are trying to be leaders in that. Some initiatives include measuring, reducing, and offsetting our carbon footprint and being living wage certified.

What little thing do you do every day to make you feel good?

 

Biking to work is the best start to the working day. It gives me time to reflect on what I want to achieve, and filter the important from the less important. 

What makes you excited about the future of the wellness space?

 

We are learning more about how what we eat and how we live our lives impacts our health and wellbeing. By providing our body with the right nutrients we support our energy levels, cognitive function, and immunity. Add exercise, time with family, and good conversation with friends to the mix and you have the perfect base for happiness. From that place we are more likely to be active participants in our community, care for the environment, and each other.
